Marvel Masterworks: Atlas Era Journey into Mystery #3
☆ Be the first to reviewThis third volume of the Marvel Masterworks: Atlas Era Journey into Mystery series collects issues #21–30 of the original 1950s horror-suspense comic, showcasing the pre-superhero monster and mystery tales that defined the Atlas era. Featuring early work by artists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, these stories range from giant creatures to eerie twists, capturing the transitional period before Marvel's Silver Age superhero boom.
"Too Human!" is a standout tale from the Atlas Era Journey into Mystery #3, showcasing Joe Kubert’s masterful artistry in both pencils and inks. A reckless driver obsessed with dominating the road meets a fateful end after a supernatural warning leads him to collide with a tree—only to be spared by a seemingly ordinary pig that had wandered into the road, leaving a farmer to ponder the man’s final, ironic act. The cover, by Joe Maneely, captures the story’s eerie, ironic tone with striking precision.

A reckless driver likes being the 'road hog' so much he designs mirrors to magnify the expressions of his motorist victims. A hitchhiker scolds him and tells him someday he’ll meet a bigger hog than himself. The man doubts this, as he considers himself the biggest. During a test run of his mirror system, he sees a huge hog just about to turn the corner. He veers to miss it and runs into a tree, killing himself. Around the bend, a farmer picks up an ordinary pig that had wandered into the road and claims that the man must’ve really loved animals in order to die just to avoid hitting this pig.
