“Too Human!”

In "Too Human!", a 1955 issue of Journey into Mystery, a self-obsessed driver obsessed with dominating the road builds a bizarre mirror system to amplify the reactions of other motorists—until a hitchhiker warns him he’ll one day face a bigger hog than himself. When the man tests his invention, he sees a monstrous hog looming around a bend and swerves to avoid it, crashing fatally into a tree. The cover by Joe Maneely captures the moment’s tension, while Joe Kubert’s art brings the story’s eerie, moral-driven tone to life.

A reckless driver likes being the 'road hog' so much he designs mirrors to magnify the expressions of his motorist victims. A hitchhiker scolds him and tells him someday he’ll meet a bigger hog than himself. The man doubts this, as he considers himself the biggest. During a test run of his mirror system, he sees a huge hog just about to turn the corner. He veers to miss it and runs into a tree, killing himself. Around the bend, a farmer picks up an ordinary pig that had wandered into the road and claims that the man must’ve really loved animals in order to die just to avoid hitting this pig.
