In "I, Whom the Gods Would Destroy," Thor's dual identity as Donald Blake fractures under the weight of mortal suffering, leading him to reject his divine role and seek a life beyond godhood. Written by Jim Shooter and Jim Owsley, with bold artwork by Paul Ryan and dynamic inks by Vince Colletta, this 1987 Marvel Graphic Novel explores the emotional toll of power and purpose—where a moment of doubt in a hospital operating room becomes the turning point that rekindles Thor’s resolve. The cover, also by Paul Ryan, captures the quiet intensity of a god in crisis.
