“The Wild Card”

Part of DC's 2013 New 52 "Villains Month" event, this Justice League #23.4 leans hard into its Secret Society branding with a cover by Mikel Janín that puts some of DC's most dangerous characters front and center. A scarred, cybernetic-eyed bruiser thrusts a massive fist toward the viewer clutching a torn, bloodied Superman emblem, while Killer Croc lunges behind him and a grinning, purple-suited figure with a bowler hat looms above — all set against a city bridge at night with a downed Superman visible in the corner. It's a genuinely unsettling lineup of villainy that sets the tone perfectly for Geoff Johns, Sterling Gates, and Szymon Kudranski's story, "The Wild Card.
