☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis collection brings together the early adventures of the second Star-Spangled Kid, Courtney Whitmore, as she takes on the mantle and teams up with her stepfather, Pat Dugan, who pilots the S.T.R.I.P.E. exo-suit. Originally published as the first eight issues of the Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. series (1999-2000), the volume sets the stage for Courtney's eventual role in the Justice Society of America. Written by Geoff Johns with art by Lee Moder, it's a foundational story for the modern JSA era.
In "New Kid on the Block," newly arrived in Blue Valley, Courtney Whitmore stumbles upon a surprising family secret: her stepfather, Pat Dugan, was once the sidekick known as Stripesy. When she accidentally activates the Star-Spangled Kid’s cosmic belt at her first school dance, the night takes a dramatic turn as a horde of hissing, hooded students descends—forcing Courtney and Pat to step into the spotlight as the new Star-Spangled Kid and S.T.R.I.P.E. Geoff Johns writes the story with Lee Moder handling the interior art, while Dan Davis provides the inks and Tom McCraw adds color. The cover, also by Lee Moder with Dan Davis inking, captures the moment of transformation.
When Courtney Whitmore moves to Blue Valley, she’s just trying to fit in—until she learns her stepfather, Pat Dugan, was once Stripesy, the sidekick to the Star-Spangled Kid. After borrowing the Kid’s cosmic belt for her first school dance, she and Pat are thrust into action when the gym is overrun by a swarm of hissing, hooded students, forcing them to step into their legacy as the new Star-Spangled Kid and S.T.R.I.P.E.
In "True Colors," the Star-Spangled Kid and S.T.R.I.P.E. face off against a hissing horde before returning home—only to be pulled into new challenges the next day. While Pat struggles with a rogue robot suit, Courtney confronts her art teacher, the villainous Paintball, in a showdown that tests more than just her skills with a brush.
In "Waking the Dead!", the Marvel Family faces off against Solomon Grundy during a visit to Blue Valley, with S.T.R.I.P.E. urging Courtney to stay back—her past with the original Kid still raw. When more undead rise, Dr. Occult arrives to lead the heroes into a battle against the mysterious force driving the resurrection.
In "The Subs, Part One," Young Justice arrives in Blue Valley chasing rumors of a new Star-Spangled Kid—only to uncover a far stranger mystery. When the team investigates, they find that Courtney’s school has been infiltrated by aliens disguised as substitute teachers, turning the halls into a high-stakes game of deception.
In "The Subs, Part Two," Pat, Mary, and Robin race against time as alien mind-control turns their allies into mindless drones. With ingenuity and teamwork, they reconfigure the transformation gun to reverse the process—before the invaders take full control.
In "You Kids Today!" from JSA Presents: Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #1, the Star-Spangled Kid clashes with Shiv in the halls of a high school, their battle echoing a larger conflict. As Shiv is subdued, the Dragon King emerges in full, ordering his forces to take her for further augmentation by Dr. Graft, while Mary discovers a love note in her locker—moments before a mysterious figure stirs from a grave in the Himalayas.
In "Crisis in Blue Valley," the lingering threat of the Nebula Man resurfaces as he draws power from Wing’s remains, targeting Earth’s cosmic energy sources—starting with Courtney’s Cosmic Converter Belt. With Pat rallying the team, Courtney must act fast, using her belt and a live wire to short out the entity before it grows stronger.
