Invincible Iron Man #1
Published on May 7, 2008, timed deliberately to the world premiere of Marvel Studios' first Iron Man feature film, this issue launched what would become one of the most critically acclaimed Iron Man runs of the modern era — a series that went on to win the 2009 Eisner Award for Best New Series. Writer Matt Fraction used the moment to push Tony Stark into genuinely uncomfortable territory, framing the post-Extremis, post-Civil War Stark as a man whose own innovations had become the world's most dangerous weapons, a thematic engine that would drive the run for four years and 60 issues. The debut of Ezekiel Stane — a cyborg bioterrorist who weaponized reverse-engineered Stark technology inside his own body — gave the series a villain who was a pointed philosophical argument against Stark as much as a physical threat, and the character has since made the leap into live-action via the Disney+ Ironheart series. More broadly, the Fraction–Larroca run that this issue inaugurated is widely credited with rehabilitating Iron Man's mainstream cultural profile just as Robert Downey Jr. was doing the same on screen.

Matt Fraction had been seeding Ezekiel Stane as a shadow antagonist in his earlier Marvel work on The Order, and Marvel editorial used the launch of the 2008 Iron Man film as a deliberate jumping-on point, releasing the issue on the same day the movie opened and commissioning six variant covers — including a photo cover using a screen capture from the film — to court cinema audiences new to the comics. The series replaced the then-running Iron Man (Vol. 4) and was the first Iron Man ongoing to carry the word 'Invincible' in its official indicia title rather than only on the cover logo. Fraction described his ambition as staging 'a long reckoning for Tony Stark,' building his run around the character's failures and desire to rebuild — a mandate that also carried Salvador Larroca's evolving digital-paint art style across the entire four-year tenure.
