Mark Brooks delivers a visceral close-up of a figure whose elaborate, tech-laden headgear is shattering apart amid a roaring inferno — one green eye visible through the fracturing visor, mouth open in a raw, anguished cry, and a reaching hand thrusting toward the viewer. The fiery backdrop and the crumbling Krakoan-era restraints create an image that feels simultaneously like a moment of breaking free and of breaking apart. With Kieron Gillen writing and Lucas Werneck on interior art, "Hated and Feared" promises the kind of charged, politically fraught mutant drama that has made this series one of 2023's most compelling corners of the X-Men line.
