“The Red Right Hand Chapter 3”

Denise Mina and Leonardo Manco's 2007 run on Hellblazer reaches its third chapter of "The Red Right Hand" with a cover by Lee Bermejo that practically pulses with visceral dread — John Constantine, shirt torn open, strains against a tangle of tubes and wires while an enormous, fleshy mechanical heart looms behind him like some grotesque altar. The golden halo-like ring framing Constantine's anguished face gives the image an almost perverse religious quality, suggesting a man caught between the sacred and the profane.
