“Bottled Light Part 1: Duty Calls”

In "Bottled Light Part 1: Duty Calls," writer Robert Venditti and artist V Ken Marion deliver a poignant origin tale set 60 years in the future, where Somar-Le recounts the legendary defense of Xudar when she was a child. As she tells her grandchildren of the Green Lanterns’ heroic stand against Starro and the shocking betrayal by Larfleeze, the story weaves in the early days of the Corps and hints at deeper conflicts yet to unfold. The emotionally resonant tale, brought to life with vivid art by V Ken Marion and Paul Neary, and finished with striking inks by Dexter Vines and color by Alex Sollazzo, culminates in the revelation that Somar-Le herself would one day become a Green Lantern. Ethan Van Sciver’s evocative cover captures the moment’s gravity, perfectly framing this powerful chapter in the Corps’ history.

60 years in the future, Somar-Le, now a grandmother, tells her grandchildren the story of when Starro attacked Xudar when she was a girl, and how after losing her parents in the attack she was inspired by the courageous Green Lanterns who came to the rescue. She re-tells the story of the Green Lanterns battle with Larfleeze to free the captured Xudarians. She also hints of some further battles of the Green Lanterns and the other Lantern Corps that we have not yet seen. At the end of the story, we learn that Somar-Le, inspired by the Corps, became a Green Lantern herself.
