When the US Airforce try to kill Gorgo's mother in New York Harbor by dropping nuclear depth bombs, it ends up causing a huge crack in the Ocean floor that releases an ancient gigantic proto-saurian creature. The creature and Gorgo's mother fight to the death in Manhattan destroying much of the city in the process.
