“The Night They Learned The Truth”

In "The Night They Learned The Truth," two survivors of a modern torpedo attack drift for days before boarding a spectral ship that shouldn’t exist—the legendary Flying Dutchman. Written by Jack Oleck and brought to life with eerie precision by Steve Ditko, whose dual role as both penciler andinker defines the story’s haunting visuals, the tale unfolds with a chilling sense of dread and mystery. The cover, also by Ditko, captures the dread of the moment with a stark, unforgettable image.

The American Destroyer Jeffries is torpedoed. Adams and Sawyer float for six days in a lifeboat until they see an old sailing ship. They climb aboard carefully as the ropes and wood are rotten. They walk the decks without the crew seeing them. They find a book written in Dutch - they are on board the Flying Dutchman. They decide to escape and fall in to the sea when a railing breaks away. They float for days clutching the railing. They are picked up by a Navy cruiser. Their papers show they were crew on the Jeffries which sank in WWI! So, where have they been since 1918?
