It collects issues from the mid-1990s, focusing on characters like Jubilee, Chamber, M, and Synch as they navigate life at the Massachusetts Academy. The volume features storylines that establish the team's dynamic and their conflicts with adversaries such as the Emplate and the Black Queen.
"Generation Next Part One: Encounter" kicks off the Phalanx Covenant arc with a pulse-pounding clash of mutants and mind games. Written by Scott Lobdell and brought to life by Chris Bachalo’s dynamic art—inked by Mark Buckingham and colored by Steve Buccellato and Electric Crayon—this issue plunges Gen X into a high-stakes rescue mission beneath Gene Nation’s underground lair. With Emma trapped and her powers suppressed, Artie leads Jubilee, Skin, and Synch on a tense mission that tests their limits, while unexpected tensions flare between Paige and Chamber—and even Wolverine has a surprising moment with Jubilee. The cover by Chris Bachalo and Adam Kubert captures the chaos in bold, striking detail.
In "The Phalanx Covenant Book One Generation Next Part 4: The Currents Shift," the next generation of mutants faces their most desperate stand yet as the Phalanx closes in. With danger mounting and the odds stacked against them, Blink makes a choice that will change everything.
In "Third Genesis," the newest generation of mutant recruits begins their training at Xavier’s, but their first mission takes a dark turn when Banshee, Jubilee, and Synch arrive to meet their new teammate, Jonothon Starsmore—only to be ambushed by the mutant vampire Emplate. With Gateway’s quick intervention, the team barely escapes, but their return to the mansion brings a new mystery: a wounded mutant lying on the grounds, whispered to be Penance.
In "Searching," the young mutants of Generation X face a mystery when they discover the injured Penance on their doorstep, leading to uneasy questions about her past and possible ties to the vampire Emplate. As a storm rolls in and Penance vanishes into the night, the team sets out to find her—only to realize too late that they’re not the ones chasing, but being chased.
In "Dead Silence," Penance flees into the woods surrounding Xavier’s, driven by fear and a desperate need to escape, forcing the Gen X team to pursue her. As she fights off most of her teammates, it’s Chamber who finally reaches her—calm, steady, and determined to make her believe they’re not her enemies.
In "Between the Cracks," Banshee and a group of Gen X teens are halfway through a chaotic Christmas road trip when their journey takes a sharp turn—literally—into a tense hostage standoff at a high school. With a young mutant holding his teacher captive and the newly upgraded Orphan Maker arriving on the scene, the situation quickly escalates beyond anything they expected.
In "Don't Touch That Dial!", Banshee reaches out to Penance as tensions rise within the team, while Paige grapples with the devastating news of the Legacy Virus, turning to drink to numb the pain. When a group of Gen X students venture to New York to meet Emma at the Frost Foundation, they instead stumble upon a bloody massacre—Hemingway, a member of Gene Nation, has killed the staff and taken their teacher.
In "Notes from the Underground," Emma Frost finds herself trapped beneath the surface, held by Gene Nation operatives Hemingway and Marrow, with the former Morlock Leech suppressing her abilities. When Artie leads Jubilee, Skin, and Synch on a rescue mission into the underground lair, they soon discover Leech’s influence is spreading—threatening to unravel their powers too. As Emma breaks free and reclaims her strength, the Gen X team must navigate the chaos of their own shifting abilities, all while a quiet moment with Xavier and a surprising exchange with a feral Wolverine hint at deeper connections beneath the surface.
In "Nights and Bolts," Chamber’s accidental explosion of the girl’s dorm leaves a mess—and a secret—when he refuses to confess the truth, even as Paige’s lingering affection complicates things. With repairs underway, Emma and Sean navigate cramped living conditions, while Synch and Skin keep the younger mutants busy building a tree house in the Danger Grotto. Just as things settle, Banshee gets a frantic call from Scotland: his ancestral castle has vanished without a trace.
When Cassidy Keep vanishes during a mission, Generation X follows the trail to a hidden fairy dimension, where ancient magic and mischievous creatures stand between them and the truth. Amidst treacherous dragons, stubborn trolls, and desperate fairies, the team must navigate a realm that resists their every move—before Cassidy is lost forever.
In an alternate dimension, Jo and the rest of Generation X find themselves caught between worlds, tasked with helping the fairies restore their Glamour Machine before Cassidy Keep vanishes back to Earth. With time running out and the fabric of reality fraying, they must navigate the strange, shifting magic of the fairy realm to keep both worlds from unraveling.
