The 'Generation Next' arc of the Phalanx Covenant crossover was deliberately engineered as a launch ramp for the Generation X ongoing series, making this issue the narrative engine behind the most significant expansion of the X-Men line since New Mutants. Blink's debut here proved unexpectedly consequential: though the Earth-616 version of the character died within a month of this issue, fan response to her sacrifice was intense enough that Lobdell and Madureira brought a reimagined version of Blink to center stage in the 1995 'Age of Apocalypse' event, eventually spinning her into the long-running Exiles series and a live-action presence in both the X-Men film franchise and television.

The issue was written by Scott Lobdell and penciled by Joe Madureira, with inks by Dan Green and colors by Steve Buccellato — the core Uncanny team that editor Bob Harras had assembled after Madureira's fill-in work drew an unusually enthusiastic reader response, prompting Harras to elevate him to regular series artist beginning with the Phalanx Covenant arc. The story title, 'Enter Freely and of Your Own Will,' borrows the phrase Count Dracula uses to welcome Jonathan Harker in Bram Stoker's novel — an intentional irony given the predatory nature of the Phalanx. Each issue in the Phalanx Covenant crossover was released in two distinct editions: a standard cover with a red stripe and a collector's edition featuring a silver holographic foil stripe on a wraparound cardstock cover; both versions included a gatefold Generation X promotional insert. The issue was collected in the 1997 trade paperback X-Men: Origin of Generation X (ISBN 0-7851-0216-7) and subsequently in the 2014 X-Men Phalanx Covenant hardcover omnibus.
