About this Issue

Geiger (2024) #5 serves as the payoff issue for the opening arc of Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's all-new ongoing series — the first five-issue run built entirely within Ghost Machine's 'The Unnamed' shared universe, published through Image Comics beginning in April 2024. The issue delivers the climactic confrontation between Tariq Geiger and The Electrician, a villain whose trap exploits Geiger's radioactive vulnerability, while also resolving the fate of Barney, the two-headed mutant wolf who had become one of the series' most emotionally resonant characters. Structurally, the final pages plant seeds for the broader 'Unknown War' mythology threading across Ghost Machine titles, tying this single-arc conclusion directly into the expanding Unnamed universe. As a creator-owned work by veterans of DC's Doomsday Clock, this issue exemplifies the Ghost Machine model: genre-driven post-apocalyptic storytelling with the full craft resources of longtime mainstream collaborators operating under complete creative ownership.

History

The 2024 Geiger ongoing launched in April of that year as the flagship title of Ghost Machine, the creator-owned and operated media company co-founded at New York Comic Con in October 2023 by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson, Jason Fabok, Bryan Hitch, and others. Ghost Machine distributes through Image Comics while allowing its creators to co-own all characters and universes they develop — a structural departure from the work-for-hire model Johns and Frank had operated under for decades at DC. The 2024 series picks up after the original 2021 Geiger miniseries and the two-issue prequel Geiger: Ground Zero (2023), with issue #5 landing on August 14, 2024 as the arc finale. Variant cover duties for this issue were shared by the regular team of Gary Frank and Brad Anderson alongside Gabriel Rodríguez, the Eisner Award-winning artist best known for IDW's Locke & Key.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published August 14, 2024 by Image Comics under the Ghost Machine imprint; 32 pages, rated T+.
  • Written by Geoff Johns; interior art and Cover A by Gary Frank and Brad Anderson; Cover B and a 1:50 foil incentive variant by Gabriel Rodríguez and Brad Anderson.
  • Serves as the arc-climax of Geiger (2024) #1–5, centering on the decisive battle between Tariq Geiger ('The Glowing Man') and the villain The Electrician, whose trap exploits Geiger's susceptibility to Boron dust.
  • Resolves the fate of Barney, the two-headed mutant wolf and Geiger's companion — Barney attacks The Electrician, short-circuiting his suit and turning the tide of the fight.
  • The closing pages introduce a mystery figure identified only as 'President Griffin,' whose face is obscured by bandages and whose right hand wears a Junkyard Joe helmet — a deliberate cross-title tease connecting the Geiger series to Ghost Machine's broader 'The Unnamed' saga.
  • Part of Ghost Machine's 'The Unnamed' universe, a shared continuity of genre heroes across history that also includes Junkyard Joe, Redcoat, and First Ghost — all published through Image Comics.
  • The 2024 Geiger series is distinct from the original 2021 six-issue miniseries; issue #5 here belongs to the second ongoing volume, not to be confused with Geiger (2021) #5.
  • A television adaptation of the Geiger property was announced in development at Paramount TV, with director Justin Simien attached and Geoff Johns involved as a producer.
