About this Issue

Geiger (2024) #2 is a structurally important early chapter in the Ghost Machine era of the Geiger mythology, deepening the post-nuclear-war road-trip framework that Johns and Frank established in issue #1 and cementing the ongoing quest to cure Tariq Geiger's radioactive condition as the series' spine. The issue introduces the town-based 'help the sheriff, earn a lead' story engine that the series would use to build out its wasteland world, while steadily escalating the threat of the pursuing mercenary known as the ElecTrician — who becomes the primary antagonist of this story arc. As one of the first ongoing titles under the creator-owned Ghost Machine collective, it represents a deliberate break from superhero genre conventions by Johns, Frank, and their collaborators, forging a shared universe grounded instead in post-apocalyptic genre fiction. Its place inside 'The Unnamed Saga' ties it to a larger interconnected storytelling project whose scope and creator-ownership model were novel in mainstream American comics.

History

Geiger (2024) #2 was published on May 8, 2024, by Image Comics under the Ghost Machine imprint, written by Geoff Johns with art by Gary Frank, colors by Brad Anderson, and lettering by Rob Leigh. It arrived one month after the series debut on April 3, 2024 — the opening salvo of Ghost Machine's April rollout of ongoing titles following the 64-page Ghost Machine #1 anthology in January 2024. Ghost Machine itself was announced at New York Comic Con on October 12, 2023, as a first-of-its-kind creator-cooperative media company in which all founding creators jointly own, operate, and share in profits from every property — a structural departure from the work-for-hire arrangements Johns and Frank had spent their careers under at DC Comics. The ongoing Geiger series was positioned as the flagship of 'The Unnamed' shared universe within Ghost Machine, and issue #2 shipped alongside a second printing of the sold-out issue #1, with Gary Frank citing it as 'the most action-packed Geiger we've ever done.'
