History

Geoff Johns and Gary Frank began developing what would become the Geiger universe immediately after completing Doomsday Clock for DC Comics, working quietly on the concept before announcing the original 2021 miniseries through Image. Johns has stated the project was directly inspired by the early days of Image Comics — the era of Spawn and Savage Dragon — and the creative freedom that came with character ownership. After the 2021 six-issue run, an 80-Page Giant, the Junkyard Joe spinoff, and the two-issue prequel Geiger: Ground Zero, Johns and his collaborators formalized their working collective as Ghost Machine, announced at NYCC in October 2023. The 2024 ongoing series, launching that April, was designed from the outset as the anchor title of Ghost Machine's 'Unnamed' universe, an interconnected line of genre books set across different periods of American history and all published through Image Comics.
