Gargoyles: Demona #4
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeTitled 'Fallen From the Ranks...,' Gargoyles: Demona #4 is a pivotal chapter in the most ambitious deep-dive into Demona's millennium-spanning hidden history that the franchise has ever attempted in any medium. Set in Constantinople in 1195 A.D., the issue weaves together key threads of the broader Gargoyles mythology by reintroducing the Eye of Odin — a franchise-defining relic — in a historically grounded medieval context that the animated series never explored. The issue also marks a meaningful early appearance in the series for the Guardian Tom, a character whose canonical significance to the Avalon arc is well established, here given a poignant mid-history moment that quietly deepens his biography. Perhaps most emotionally resonant is the issue's exploration of what it means for an immortal mother to love a mortal daughter, a theme that sits at the heart of the entire Demona miniseries and has no precedent in prior Gargoyles comics or television episodes.

The Gargoyles: Demona miniseries — of which issue #4 is a chapter — grew from a pitch by original animated series co-showrunner Frank Paur, who brought the concept to franchise creator Greg Weisman; the two then developed it together alongside editor Nate Cosby and colorist Robby Bevard, a veteran of the earlier SLG Gargoyles comics run. For Paur, whose animation credits span G.I. Joe, Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men: Evolution, and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, this series represents his first-ever work as a mainstream interior comics artist — a notable career milestone for one of the most experienced animators in the industry. Issue #1 of the series was originally slated for May 28, 2025, but was delayed due to disruptions with Diamond Distribution; Dynamite subsequently severed ties with Diamond in June 2025 and moved to Lunar Distribution, making the series also a small marker in the broader comics-industry distribution shake-up of that year.

- Written by Greg Weisman (creator of the original Gargoyles animated series) and illustrated by Frank Paur (co-showrunner of the original animated series), with colors by Robby Bevard.
- The story is set in Constantinople in 1195 A.D., making it the fourth consecutive issue in the series to dramatize a distinct historical era from Demona's thousand-year lifespan.
- The Eye of Odin — the same relic later possessed by Xanatos in the television series — appears here within the Byzantine imperial treasury, providing an in-continuity origin for how the artifact moved through history before reaching the modern era.
- Guardian Tom makes a significant appearance, visiting Constantinople to assess whether the outside world is safe for gargoyles; his scenes connect directly to the Avalon arc established in the animated series.
- Shahrizad (identified in GargWiki coverage as 'Shari'), a recurring supporting character in the series, co-investigates the murder mystery alongside Angelika.
- The issue's central dramatic revelation is that Demona stole the Eye of Odin not for personal power but in an attempt to grant her adopted, mortal daughter Angelika the gift of immortality — which Angelika ultimately refuses and throws into the sea.
