About this Issue

Gargoyles: Demona #2 — subtitled 'Fortune Favors the Brave...' — is the first comic to dramatize Demona and her newly established adopted daughter Angelika voyaging with Norse king Sigurd Magnusson's fleet, exploring a century of the franchise's history that the original animated series could only hint at. Because the Manhattan Clan spent those centuries frozen in stone sleep, this issue (and the series as a whole) fills a narrative void unique among Gargoyles comics, giving Demona — always the franchise's most complex figure — genuine interiority and continuity across multiple historical eras. The issue also carries a quiet moment of canon-bridging significance: it canonizes the Eye of Odin's video-game visual appearance by depicting it worn by King Sigurd, then destroyed in battle, with a new setting forged that matches how the artifact looked on the television series. Weisman and Paur's decision to cast each issue of the five-part series in a distinct genre — swashbuckling adventure for this second chapter — gives the mini-series an anthological ambition rarely attempted in licensed comics.

History

Gargoyles: Demona grew directly out of an idea Frank Paur pitched to Greg Weisman; the two original Gargoyles co-showrunners then developed the series together alongside editor Nate Cosby, with colorist Robby Bevard — a veteran of the SLG/Slave Label Graphics era of Gargoyles comics — returning to the fold. For Paur, whose post-Gargoyles credits include X-Men: Evolution and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the series represents his first-ever work as an interior comic book artist. Issue #1 of the series encountered real-world distribution trouble when Dynamite severed ties with Diamond Distribution in June 2025 and moved to Lunar Distribution; issue #2 arrived on July 30, 2025, fully under the new arrangement.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Gargoyles co-creator Greg Weisman and illustrated by fellow co-showrunner Frank Paur; Paur's work on this series marks his debut as an interior comic book artist.
  • Set in the year 1107, the issue follows an immortal Demona and her adopted daughter Angelika as they join the Norwegian fleet of Sigurd Magnusson, last of the Viking kings, on a raiding expedition across the Mediterranean that culminates at Constantinople.
  • The issue continues developing Angelika — first introduced in issue #1 — a gargoyle originally from the Northumbria Clan who adopted Demona's name as inspiration for her own and became Demona's de facto daughter; she is described as the series' second lead alongside Demona.
  • Greg Weisman designed the five-issue mini-series so that each chapter shifts genre: issue #1 is historical fiction, issue #2 is a swashbuckling adventure, issue #3 horror, issue #4 a murder mystery, and issue #5 an elegy.
  • Issue #2 canonizes the Eye of Odin's appearance from the 1995 Gargoyles video game by depicting King Sigurd wearing it as a 'lucky charm'; it is destroyed in battle during this issue, and a new setting is forged that corresponds to how the artifact appeared in the original animated series.
  • Cover artists for issue #2 include Meghan Hetrick (cover A), Jae Lee and June Chung (cover B), Frank Paur (cover C), Sebastián Piriz, and Mark Bagley, among multiple variants.
  • The series fills in Demona's centuries-long off-panel history — the period during which the Manhattan Clan was petrified — territory that had never been explored at this depth in any prior Gargoyles comic or supplementary material.
  • Gargoyles: Demona is the fourth comic mini-series published by Dynamite Entertainment in its Gargoyles line, following the main 'Here in Manhattan' run (2022–2023), Gargoyles: Dark Ages (2023), and Gargoyles: Quest (2024).
