G.I. Joe, a Real American Hero #86

May 1989 · Marvel · 1.00 USD; 1.25 CAD; 0.50 GBP
“... Not Fade Away!”

In "... Not Fade Away!", the G.I. Joe team joins forces with the original G.I. Joe to stop Cobra—disguised as Iron Grenadiers—from seizing a powerful laser defense system. When Cobra steals the critical control disks, the Joe team must act fast, culminating in a daring strike that destroys the drone carrying the data. The revelation that the original Joe is still alive—and his quiet moment with Jane—adds a poignant weight to the mission, leaving the team with a deeper understanding of their legacy. Written by Larry Hama and illustrated by Marshall Rogers, with inks by Randy Emberlin and colors by Bob Sharen, the issue’s cover by Ron Wagner and Bob McLeod captures the tension and history of the moment.

The Joe team hooks up with the original G.I. Joe to keep Cobra (disguised as Iron Grenadiers) from taking over a laser defense system that he developed for the government. Cobra steals the disks containing the needed information to control the defense system, but Joe saves the day when he targets the drone carrying the disks, and fires a laser to disintegrate it. He then tells the Joe team he was the original G.I. Joe, and Jane was his nurse when Hawk wants to make him an honorary member, to which Muskrat responds he always thought the original team was bigger than just the two of them.
