“The Left Hand of Oblivion”

Ernie Chua's rooftop cover sets the tension perfectly: Wonder Woman has her golden lasso around Uncle Sam while declaring his Freedom Fighters outlaws she intends to bring in, as the Ray and the Human Bomb clash with Black Condor and Phantom Lady in the skies over a sprawling cityscape behind them. It's a genuinely compelling superhero-versus-superhero setup — heroes on both sides of the law makes for a more interesting conflict than a simple villain punch-up. For 30 cents in 1976, this issue delivered the kind of guest-star drama that kept readers coming back to DC's patriotic team.
