“Sing Me a Car Tune”

Charlton's teen humor series delivers a poolside laugh with this September 1961 issue, featuring a wonderfully absurd cover by Jon D'Agostino: Freddy has apparently suited up in a full deep-sea diving helmet and purple wetsuit rather than face the water, while a heavyset fellow in polka-dot swim trunks coaxes him toward the pool with the reassurance, "Anyone can learn how to swim!" A crowd of amused teens looks on from above, and a contest poster promises a free swimming pool as the prize — making Freddy's reluctance all the more ironic. At just 10 cents, this is lighthearted 1960s fun at its most charming.
