“Spare the Rod”

Mel Casson's cheerful cover sets the tone perfectly for this 1954 Dell charmer — little Angel zooms along on her tricycle, pushing a green toy baby carriage (complete with a red cross) that carries a very relaxed orange tabby cat, while a friendly policeman waves them through traffic in the background. It's a wonderfully silly slice of mid-century childhood mischief, with the halo floating above the title's "A" hinting that Angel's good intentions may outpace her judgment. A delightful ten-cent treat for fans of lighthearted humor comics from the era.
