In this 1943 Four Color adventure, Smitty finds a wounded bear cub beneath a bush where a dead wolf lies—its last act a bite on a helpless papoose. With the Indian camp now a refuge, George and Mr. Bailey arrive to find him, and the tribe sends up smoke signals to summon an amphibious airplane for their rescue. A heartfelt tale of survival and unexpected bonds, all drawn with quiet precision by Walter Berndt, whose distinctive style brings the wilderness to life. The cover, also by Berndt, captures the moment with a striking, grounded simplicity.
