In "Adventure Bound," a 1949 Four Color comic, young Paul Clark flees 18th-century Boston aboard The Boston Belle, pursued by his younger brother Nat, who stows away. Their journey takes a dangerous turn when they're captured by the ruthless Pirate Captain Redbeard, and Paul is forced to walk the plank—only to be saved by a daring rescue through a cabin window by Maria and Nat. With the pirate ship doomed to explode, the trio escapes and is ultimately rescued by a passing Spanish vessel. Written by Gaylord Du Bois and illustrated by Bill Ely, this swashbuckling tale of courage and brotherhood features dynamic artwork from Ely, who also handled the cover pencils and inks.

Boston, 1723. Paul Clark runs away to sea aboard The Boston Belle. His 8-year old brother, Nat, has followed, and stows away. Maria is a passenger who travels to join her father, the governor of Trinidad Island. Paul is wounded defending her from the Pirate captain, Redbeard, who loots the ship, and takes them hostage. Paul walks the plank, but Maria and Nat throw him a rope, and pull him back aboard through their cabin window. Eventually the pirate ship explodes. Paul, Nat and Maria, who had escaped shortly before this, are rescued by a Spanish ship.
