“Bus Stop”

"Bus Stop" is a whimsical twist on the classic fairy tale, reimagined by John Stanley in this 1947 Four Color Comics entry. In a playful take, Lulu recounts how her mother’s bean soup, rather than a beanstalk, becomes an ocean when the beans are tossed out—leading Lulu on a surprising voyage to meet a giant who’s less than thrilled with the turn of events. The story’s charm shines through Stanley’s writing and art, with additional pencils by Charles Hedinger and inks by Irving Tripp, all brought to life on a cover by John Stanley.

Lulu tells Alvin the story of the magic beans. In this telling, Lulu's mother cooks the beans, so when they're thrown out they make an ocean of bean soup, rather than growing into a giant beanstalk. Lulu sails on the bean soup ocean and finds the giant, who isn't happy about the turn of events.
