“The Baker's Apprentice”

In "The Baker's Apprentice," a 1959 Four Color comic, young Fredric steps up when his crusty old baker mentor leaves for a week, only to find himself in over his head—until an old woman teaches him the secret of baking Christmas cookies. The treat becomes a sensation, even catching the eye of the Princess, but when the baker returns and discovers the holiday baking, his fury leads to a dramatic dismissal. Cover by Mel Crawford, with art and inks by Mel Crawford and lettering by Ben Oda, this charming tale of dough, duty, and unexpected sweetness is a warm, nostalgic slice of mid-century Americana.
