“Dysfunctional [Part 1 of 3]”

Something has gone very wrong for Marvel's First Family — the cover of Fantastic Four #514 shows all four members in chaotic freefall, tangled around elongated blue-green limbs that can only belong to a stretched Mr. Fantastic, with the Thing tumbling upside-down at upper left, the Human Torch blazing in a spiral of fire above center, and Sue Storm in her blue uniform bracing herself mid-air with an expression that mixes alarm and determination. Gene Ha's cover art renders the fiery orange sky and the sense of violent disorder with striking clarity, making "Dysfunctional" feel like exactly the right title for this three-part arc. With Mark Waid and Karl Kesel co-writing and Paco Medina on interior art, this 2004 issue promises the kind of team-in-crisis tension that makes the FF so compelling to follow.
