ElfQuest #12 was produced by Wendy Pini, who handled plot, script, pencils, inks, and lettering, with Richard Pini contributing to the plot — the same creative arrangement that defined all 20 issues of the Original Quest. WaRP Graphics, whose name is an acronym formed from Wendy and Richard Pini, was incorporated by the couple in 1977 after they were dissatisfied with the production quality of the series' debut in Fantasy Quarterly #1. Issue #12 appeared on a three-times-per-year schedule (February, June, October), in the magazine-sized black-and-white format with a full-color glossy cover that the Pinis maintained throughout the original run. The entire Original Quest, including this issue, was later reprinted by Marvel Comics' Epic imprint in 32 color installments beginning in 1985, giving the series its first mainstream newsstand distribution.
