“A Brain Is a Terrible Thing to Waste”

The "Robot Wars!" banner says it all — this January 2005 issue of John Byrne and Doug Hazlewood's Doom Patrol run plunges the team into a frantic battle against a swarming tide of mechanical attackers. The cover, penciled and inked by Byrne himself, packs in a wonderfully chaotic scene: a determined woman with cybernetic attachments wrapped around her charges forward fists-first, a glowing skeletal figure crackles with blue energy overhead, and at least two other teammates struggle amid the crush of relentless robots. It's a dense, energetic composition that captures the Patrol at their scrappy, outnumbered best.
