Doctor Fate #11
A lone, crouching figure in golden and blue garb is dwarfed by a towering mass of jagged, clawing demonic shapes that loom across a blood-red sky — the cover tagline "Welcome to Apokolips" making the hellish setting unmistakable. Shawn McManus's cover art for this 1989 issue captures a sense of overwhelming, suffocating dread, with Dr. Fate isolated on a rocky outcrop against that writhing horde. J. M. DeMatteis and McManus were clearly pushing the series into dark, ambitious territory with "The Death of Innocence, Part Two: Anger!" — and this cover alone makes a compelling case to dive in.
