Scott Snyder came aboard Detective Comics in 2011 as a relative newcomer, fresh from American Vampire at Vertigo, teaming with British artist Jock (Mark Simpson), who had previously drawn The Losers for DC/Vertigo. The two divided storytelling duties with a second artist, Francesco Francavilla, who handled the parallel James Gordon Sr./Gordon Jr. backup stories throughout the arc, while Jock illustrated the Dick Grayson Batman chapters. Colorist David Baron and letterer Jared K. Fletcher rounded out the creative team, with Mike Marts as editor. The arc ran across Detective Comics #871–881, and #880 — titled 'My Dark Architect' — was the second-to-last issue of that original volume, going on sale July 27, 2011; the story was later collected in trade, deluxe hardcover, and a black-and-white 'Batman Noir' edition, and DC issued a facsimile reprint edition of #880 in August 2025.
