“The Mystery of San José Island”

From June 1937, this fourth issue of DC's anthology mystery series presents a striking cover by Creig Flessel: a square-jawed detective in a red overcoat and yellow hat bursts forward from a dramatic starburst of jagged black-and-white rays, badge gleaming and pistol in hand. The composition radiates urgency and pulp-era cool, perfectly setting the mood for the interior mystery, "The Mystery of San José Island," crafted by the team of Siegel and Shuster. A wonderful snapshot of comics storytelling in its earliest, most adventurous days.

Regan and Sally are still prisoners of Olga Balinoff. He pushes a flower pot onto the head of Officer O'Toole, who races up the fire escape in time to save Regan from being shot. But he is duped by Olga and allows her and her two cronies to leave. Taking Regan and Sally to the police station, he is bawled out by the commissioner, who tells Regan that the lab have figured out the secret of the mysterious bronze figure.
