“Batman and Robin's Greatest Mystery”

A wonderful slice of 1956 DC storytelling, this issue of Detective Comics presents a delightfully unsettling scenario right on Sheldon Moldoff's cover: Batman and Robin stand bewildered in the street, their word balloon asking "Who — who are we? What are we doing here in these strange costumes?" while a grinning villain leans from a window crowing that his sonic projector has given the Dynamic Duo amnesia. The cover copy promises that Batman and Robin must "solve the mystery of their own secret identities," a clever hook that draws you straight into Dave Wood's script, brought to life on the interior pages by Joe Certa. With 5,000 contest prizes also on offer, this ten-cent issue delivered plenty of excitement for its original readers.
