“National Maul”

Few covers in 2013 captured Deadpool's absurd charm quite like this one: a zombified George Washington stands triumphantly in a cemetery, planting a skull-and-crossbones flag and hatchet in hand, declaring "I cannot tell a lie… I killed Deadpool with my little hatchet!" — while the Merc with a Mouth lies face-down in the grass below him. The watercolor-style artwork by Zachary Baldus gives the whole grim, ridiculous scene an unexpectedly painterly elegance that makes it all the funnier. Writers Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan, with interior art by Tony Moore and colors by Val Staples, bring their irreverent sensibility to "National Maul" — and this cover promises nothing less than undead Founding Fathers at their most dangerous.
