“We Fought A Zoo”

Something wonderfully absurd is happening on this cover by Geof Darrow: a gun-toting Deadpool stands his ground against an overwhelming menagerie that includes a massive tusked elephant (with a gorilla perched on top), a roaring grizzly bear, a tiger, a black bear, a wolf, a small dog, and a flamingo — plus a green-skinned villain riding the tiger with a rifle. The story title "We Fought A Zoo" says everything you need to know, and Darrow's meticulous linework makes the sheer chaos feel both ridiculous and completely earnest. Writers Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan, with art by Tony Moore and colors by Val Staples, deliver what looks like one of 2013's most entertainingly unhinged superhero comics.
