Crypt of Horror #29
"A Death for a Death" delivers a chilling twist on the classic wish-fulfillment trope, centering on Edgar, a man whose life of quiet desperation takes a surreal turn when he stumbles upon a mysterious shop selling bottled Genii—tiny, sentient beings trapped in glass. With just five dollars in his pocket, he purchases one, unaware of the terrible cost that comes with his sudden chance at power. Illustrated with striking, moody precision by Rocco "Rocke" Mastroserio, this 2016 tale from Crypt of Horror #29 is a masterclass in dread and consequence, where every wish carries a price far heavier than money.

Edgar was a small, ungifted, simple man, who could not see himself being anything but a wage-slave all of his life, so he decided to do something about it by becoming a petty thief to earn extra money. One day, he visits an out-of-the-way shop and is shown glass bottles containing live tiny people inside of it, who are actually Genii. For $50 million, the bottle and any Genie is his to make whatever living from it he can. When Edgar tells the shop owner that he only has $5, the owner agrees and sells him the bottled Genie anyway, much to his dismay in the end!
