“Up Pops the Devil!”

"Up Pops the Devil!" kicks off with a chilling twist in Spook Comics #1 (1945), a 10-cent dive into horror from Baily Publishing Company. Written and illustrated by Bill Madden, the story follows a medical journal writer visiting a mental hospital—only to reveal himself as the very doctor he claims to be investigating. The cover, by John Giunta, captures the eerie tone with a haunting, stylized image that perfectly sets the mood for this early horror tale.

A medical journal writer visits a mental hospital. He interviews a patient, who says he was turned into a "living corpse" by Dr. Paul Barer. Paul Barer used his victim as a stage performer and also ordered him to abduct celebrities who were then put into a trance and displayed in a wax museum. The "journalist" is revealed to be Dr. Paul Barer.
