“The Beep”

Marvel's irreverent humor mag — self-billed as "The Magazine That Dares to Be Dumb" — serves up its "Big New Anything to Make a Buck Issue" with a cover by Bob Larkin that cleverly spoofs the Jaws underwater-attack image: a bug-eyed man clinging to a life preserver floats at the surface while a woman in a bikini sinks beneath him, desperately reaching upward — only instead of a shark, she's grasping for a copy of Crazy itself. It's a sharp, well-painted gag that captures everything the magazine stood for in 1978: shameless self-promotion wrapped in genuinely sharp parody.
