“Hammy Days”

Marvel's humor magazine lives up to its "Dares to Be Dumb" motto with this memorably unsettling "Welcome to the Big City" issue — Bob Larkin's painted cover depicts a shell-shocked, wide-eyed Santa Claus standing battered and bewildered on a city sidewalk next to a fire hydrant, while a trio of tough street kids in studded leather jackets and skull-and-crossbones gear walk away hauling his sack of gifts and scattered presents. It's a sharp, darkly comic image that captures the collision of holiday cheer with hard urban reality, and at 50 cents in 1977, Crazy #23 delivers that irreverent wit in spades.
