The drug-running mobsters, the family, with the help of police on the take, trap and kill Detective O'Rielly in a gas chamber filled with gas by the late Simon Marshall (the same man responsible for creating Cloak and Dagger). Although, O'Rielly dies, the gas, in combination with Cloak and Dagger's powers, bring her back to life as the super-powered (and vengeful) Mayhem.
