Written primarily by Dave Wood and illustrated by Jack Kirby, these Silver Age tales follow the four adventurers—Ace, Rocky, Red, and Prof—as they face bizarre threats and supernatural mysteries. The hardcover Archive Edition preserves the classic comics in their original color, with restored artwork and historical backmatter.
In "The Secret of the Sorcerer's Mirror," the Challengers of the Unknown are drawn into a bizarre experiment when a monkey with meteorite-enhanced abilities is sent into space—only for Rocky to take the same serum and rocket into the unknown. Suddenly empowered with freeze rays, super strength, and invisibility, Rocky’s mind begins to unravel, leading him into a dangerous encounter with a crook who wants to exploit his powers. Written by Dave Wood and illustrated by Jack Kirby, with inks by Jack Kirby and Roz Kirby, and colors by Jamison, this issue features a cover by Jack Kirby and Wally Wood, blending science fiction and mystery in a story that tests the limits of power and memory.
In "The Secret of the Sorcerer's Mirror," the Challengers of the Unknown race to recover a stolen artifact linked to ancient sorcery, tracking clues from a mysterious mirror and chart that point to three perilous locations: the sea bottom, a stone needle, and Sinbad's Island. With Mycroft and his gang on the move and the fate of a long-lost genie's power at stake, the team splits up to confront dangers across the globe—each facing trials that test their courage and cunning.
In "The Menace of the Invincible Challenger," the Challengers of the Unknown are called to a lab where a monkey’s sudden superpowers—triggered by a meteorite-derived pill—have left it comatose. When Rocky takes the same pill and rockets into space, he returns with incredible abilities and a fractured mind, becoming a dangerous wildcard. As a crook tries to exploit him, the Challengers and June arrive just in time to see whether Rocky’s buried decency can rise above his chaos.
In "The Wizard of Time," the Challengers of the Unknown dive into a mystery when Greek-suited agents attempt to steal a plane, leading them to the enigmatic time-traveling scientist Darius Tiko. As the team races through ancient Greece, Egypt, and the 15th century, they must unravel Tiko’s temporal experiments before he alters history—only to face a mysterious machine that decides their fate in the future.
In "The Riddle of the Star-Stone," an archaeology assistant named Vreedl steals a mystical artifact forged by an ancient sorcerer, unleashing a series of transformations that turn him into a flame man, bird man, and fish man as he flees across South America, India, and the Bay of Sharks. The Challengers of the Unknown track him through these exotic locales, uncovering the stone’s strange power—until Vreedl discovers a fourth stone and becomes seemingly invincible. When he finally smashes it, his powers vanish, leaving behind a haunting question: what if someone else could harness its might?
In "Captives of the Space Circus," the Challengers of the Unknown answer a distress call only to be ensnared by a bizarre space circus, where they're forced to fight monstrous Quadro in a brutal arena. Trapped among other alien captives, the team must survive the circus's twisted acts—until Prof discovers a hidden truth about the environment that could turn the tide.
When pilot June Robbins crash-lands on a mysterious island, she stumbles upon an ancient lamp that awakens a dangerous enchantment. The Challengers of the Unknown follow her trail, only to uncover a hidden valley where magic and menace collide—finding June transformed, her mind ensnared by the sinister Charles Agar.
In "The Beasts from Planet Nine," the Challengers of the Unknown race against time after discovering a crashed spaceship and three alien creatures imprisoned within. With only moments of borrowed time to spare, they must decide whether to free the beasts—or lock them away once more.
In "The Isle of No Return," the Challengers of the Unknown team up with honorary member June Robbins to track down a burglar who can walk through walls, leading them to an abandoned lab tied to the mysterious Prof. Macon. When the thief, Anton Zammer, uses one of Macon’s forgotten inventions to shrink and trap the team, June’s quick thinking becomes their only hope of escape.
In "The Man Who Stole the Future," Jo and the Challengers are drawn into a crisis when Marie, a friend of June’s, seeks their help after strange occurrences plague her homeland, Mordania. There, they confront the sinister Drabny, a mastermind whose advanced technology has given him control over the nation’s fate.
