Challengers of the Unknown #4
In "Chapter 1: The Wizard of Time," the Challengers of the Unknown face their most baffling case yet when a mysterious soldier from a forgotten past is captured trying to steal a plane. Led by a man who speaks only of an "Island of the Wizard," the team follows a trail of ancient riddles to a hidden realm where time itself is bent by the enigmatic scientist Darius Tiko. Written and illustrated by Jack Kirby, with inks by Wally Wood and letters by Joe Letterese, this 1958 adventure features Kirby’s dynamic cover art and plunges readers into a mind-bending mystery where past and present collide—without revealing how it ends.
In "Chapter 1: The Wizard of Time," the Challengers of the Unknown are called in when a group of men in ancient Greek garb try to steal a plane—only one is captured, and his only plea is to return to the "Island of the Wizard." Guided by the prisoner, the team journeys to a remote island where they encounter the reclusive scientist Darius Tiko, whose experiments with time travel have drawn the attention of the past. When Tiko vanishes into a time cube, the Challengers and the soldier follow, chasing the elusive inventor through shifting moments in history.
In "Chapter II: The Men Who Rode Across the Sun," Ace and Rocky, separated from the rest of the team, race through ancient Greece in search of Tiko and his stolen technology—only to be branded as omens by a wary oracle. Fleeing the enraged locals, they locate Tiko’s hidden plane, crash-land it near a forgotten ruin, and hope the wreckage leads Prof and Red back to them with the time cube.
In the sands of Egypt, Prof and Red dismantle Tiko’s stolen telescope, rejoin Rocky and Ace, and follow a mysterious lead into the 15th century—where they seek the legendary Nostradamus, only to learn Tiko has already arrived ahead of them.
In "null," Doctor Rocket tours an alien city sealed beneath a massive glass dome, where the bizarre custom of washing the roof every Tuesday takes over the entire population—no work, no plans, just endless scrubbing under the dome’s shimmering surface.
In "Chapter IV: The Mechanical Judge," the Challengers of the Unknown are transported to the year 3,000 AD, where they’re swiftly arrested and brought before a cold, unblinking machine judge. Though cleared of all charges, the machine sends them back to their own time—trapped in a single cube—while Tiko remains behind to face a fate only the future can decide.
