Created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, these 1950s tales follow four adventurers who, having cheated death, dedicate their lives to exploring the unknown and battling bizarre threats. The volume showcases the high-energy, monster-filled storytelling that defined the pre-Marvel Kirby-Simon partnership.
In "The Secret of the Sorcerer's Box [Chapter 1]," four heroes survive a miraculous crash only to find themselves marked by fate—alive, unharmed, and aware they’re living on borrowed time. Determined to make every moment count, they embrace the unknown, answering a summons from Morelian, descendant of Merlin, to unlock the first chamber of a forbidden alchemist’s box and confront wonders beyond mortal understanding.
In "Dragon Seed [Chapter 2]," the Challs return to a remote tropical island to confront the mystery of a mysterious box they’ve brought from their last expedition. After drawing straws, they open the first chamber, unleashing a stone giant from legend—its rampage threatens passing ships, even surviving an atom bomb blast. Now, with the island still unstable and the next chamber waiting, Rocky prepares to face whatever lies within.
In "The Freezing Sun [Chapter 3]," Red returns to the island to confront a second chamber left open—and finds Rocky frozen solid. As a sentient freezing sun drains heat from everything it touches, Red must improvise a vacuum chamber to trap the entity before it spreads. Meanwhile, Prof, realizing the Dragon Seed Giant can’t be destroyed by force, begins to unravel its existence through pure thought, while Morelian watches silently from above.
In "The Whirling Weaver [Chapter 4]," the Challengers of the Unknown face a new threat: a mysterious tube that unleashes a spinning device weaving deadly ribbons across entire cities. After tracking the source and halting the machine, they return to the island to find Morelian has opened the fourth chamber—driven by greed, he claims a diamond ring he believes grants immortality. But the ring’s true power is far more perilous than he imagined.
When a desperate German scientist named Felix Hesse begs the Challengers of the Unknown for help, he warns them of a monstrous creation he can no longer control—Ultivac. As the team prepares to track down the rogue machine, a giant robotic hand smashes through the window and snatches Hesse away, leaving only chaos in its wake. The Challengers are on the case: "Track down Ultivac!"
In "Chapter 3: The Fearful Millions," Hesse and Barker seize control of the towering robot Ultivac, only to unleash a terrifying chain of events when the machine sends a psychic signal to June. With the robot now free and carrying her beneath the waves, Ace and Prof must race to stop it—before the sea claims them all.
In "Chapter 4: The Fatal Prediction," the Challengers of the Unknown face a chilling encounter with Ultivac, a seemingly sentient robot whose arrival stirs fierce debate among them. When June defends the machine as a scientific marvel, the team is thrust into a tense standoff that turns deadly—only to be upended by a shocking twist that forces them to reconsider what it means to be human.
In "The Tyrans [Chapter 2]" from *Challengers of the Unknown Archives #1*, Ace and Rocky survive a plunge into a miles-deep airlift, navigating a vast underground airshaft that leads them to a hidden alien city. There, they discover the captured scientists and learn the aliens are secretly planting explosives worldwide to reduce Earth’s mass—part of a plan to enslave humanity. With the invaders preparing for their next move, the Challengers must find a way to strike before the countdown to global catastrophe begins.
In "The Thing That Came Out of the Sea [Chapter 3]," the Challengers of the Unknown face a desperate race against time as they confront an alien threat beneath the ocean floor. With gravity turned deadly and gas attacks closing in, the team splits to tackle the crisis—while a monstrous claw-machine rises from the Pacific to menace the Navy.
In "One Minute to Doom [Chapter 4]," the Challengers face a final, desperate stand on the Pacific island as Red unleashes a deadly corrosive gas that begins to eat through the alien machine. With Ace rallying a fleet of bombers to strike the crumbling base, the team races against time to stop the threat—though not without cost, as Prof’s icy dive at the South Pole leaves him with nothing worse than a cold.
In "Menace of the Ancient Vials [Chapter 1]," Karnak and his men take refuge on a remote island during their flight from the Challengers, only to stumble upon Amos Hunter and five enigmatic vials. When the first vial is opened, it unleashes a sudden, terrifying transformation—two of the gang members grow into towering giants, setting off a chain of escalating danger.
In "The Traitorous Challenger," the Challengers of the Unknown face an unstoppable, one-eyed, box-like monster that lays waste to villages—until their weapons prove useless. As June’s strange actions begin to undermine their mission, Prof pieces together the creature’s secret: its single eye is solar-powered. With time running out and the sun setting, the team must survive the monster’s final hours, unaware that June’s sabotage was the key to their survival all along.
In "The Monster Maker," the Challengers of the Unknown face off against the ambitious Roc, who wields mind-over-matter to summon a giant ape and missile. When the scientist behind the power device grants Ace the same ability, the battle escalates into a surreal clash of imagination—dragon versus knight, vacuum cleaner versus mirrors—until Ace uses spinning circles to outwit Roc in a dazzling display of mental mastery.
