Jun 1968 · DC · 0.12 USD
“The Legion of the Weird!”

In "The Legion of the Weird!", Red—reborn after presumed death with no memory—returns to Challenger Island, where he teams up with Multi-Man to create a mysterious Liquid Light formula. After drinking it and transforming into a man-fish, he’s captured by pirates and forced into a living exhibit as the mythical "Lord of the Ocean," where he forms an unlikely bond with a Polynesian girl named Tiana. Written by Arnold Drake and illustrated by Bob Brown, with inks by Mike Esposito and lettering by Milt Snapinn, this 1968 DC classic features a cover by Bob Brown and Mike Esposito that captures the eerie, otherworldly tone of Red’s transformation into the vengeful legend Seekeenakee.

After Red was supposedly killed, he had amnesia. Recalling only Challenger Island, he went there and met Multi-Man, made his Liquid Light formula, but drank it himself. Red turned into a man-fish and swam into pirates, then collapsed, waking in chains. Pike had put him on exhibit as "The Lord of the Ocean," where he befriended a Polynesian girl, Tiana. Pike persuaded Red to become Seekeenakee, a tiki legend, and fetched Tiana. Red transformed into the "living god" for revenge, but the girl regretted betraying the gods and fell to her apparent death, causing Red to go to war as Seekeenakee.
