Captain Marvel (2012) #7 marks the opening chapter of the 'Down' arc and serves as the first in-continuity encounter between Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau since Carol assumed the Captain Marvel mantle in issue #1 of the same series. The confrontation directly addresses the weight of the title's legacy — Monica had carried the name through much of the 1980s as a founding Avenger and team leader — making this issue a deliberate, emotionally loaded reckoning with the character's generational history. History

The issue was written by Kelly Sue DeConnick alongside co-writer Christopher Sebela, with interior art and colors by Dexter Soy — the same core team that launched the series in July 2012. DeConnick's run was editorially shepherded by Sana Amanat, and was published under Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. The cover was produced by artist Jamie McKelvie with colors by Jordie Bellaire, continuing a cover collaboration that had been a visual hallmark of the series from issue #1. DeConnick, who drew on personal family ties to the Air Force in developing Carol's character, co-wrote issues #7 through #12 with Sebela, expanding the creative team as the book transitioned into its second story arc.
