The issue was written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, whose ongoing Captain Marvel vol. 7 series had launched in July 2012 and was a cornerstone of Marvel's Marvel NOW! initiative. DeConnick had initially planned the series for only six issues, but its success led to an extended run that culminated in this crossover with Avengers Assemble. The story was edited by Sana Amanat and Lauren Sankovitch, with Stephen Wacker as senior editor and Axel Alonso as editor-in-chief; it was Amanat who was also a co-creator of Kamala Khan, making the editorial team's fingerprints on both developments in this issue particularly interconnected. Interior art was split between pencillers Scott Hepburn and Gerardo Sandoval, with Andy Troy on colors and Joe Caramagna lettering, while Joe Quinones provided the main cover and a 1-in-30 incentive variant was drawn by Amanda Conner.
