About this Issue

Captain Britain #1 (October 1976) marks the first time Marvel UK produced wholly original comic content — a watershed departure from years of simply repackaging American reprints for British newsagents. It introduces Brian Braddock, the Thames University physics student who becomes Captain Britain after being empowered by the Arthurian wizard Merlyn and his daughter Roma (the Lady of the Northern Skies), making this the debut of a character whose mythology would eventually give the entire Marvel multiverse its primary designation as 'Earth-616.' The series planted seeds that flowered into the Captain Britain Corps concept, the founding of Excalibur, and the wider integration of British superhero storytelling into the global Marvel Universe.

History

By 1976, Marvel UK had spent four years packaging American reprints for the British weekly market but was losing ground to homegrown anthology titles from Fleetway and DC Thomson, so the New York office resolved to create a bespoke British flagship character. London-born writer Chris Claremont — then ascending rapidly off his early X-Men work — was assigned to devise the name, origin, and cast, while Incredible Hulk veteran Herb Trimpe, who was living in Cornwall at the time, handled the pencils; Fred Kida inked, Marie Severin colored, and Larry Lieber edited. The creative team was entirely American-based, with the eight-page installments produced in the US and then shipped to the UK, and the identity of the costume's designer remains disputed — Trimpe himself has speculated it was John Romita Sr. Marvel sent Stan Lee to Britain to promote the launch, an event that drew reviews (albeit negative ones) in both The Financial Times and The Daily Record.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance and origin of Captain Britain (Brian Braddock), created by writer Chris Claremont and penciller Herb Trimpe, inked by Fred Kida — the first character produced specifically for the British market by Marvel.
  • First appearance of the villain The Reaver (Joshua Stragg), the technological criminal whose attack on the Darkmoor nuclear research centre triggers Brian Braddock's transformation.
  • First appearance of Merlyn (unnamed in this issue) and the Lady of the Northern Skies (Roma, also unnamed here), the Arthurian-mythic figures who grant Braddock the Amulet of Right and transform him into Captain Britain.
  • The issue is a British weekly anthology: the eight-page Captain Britain lead strip (in full colour) is supplemented by a black-and-white reprint of pages 1–10 of Fantastic Four #110 (May 1971, art by John Buscema) and a colour reprint of pages 1–5 of Strange Tales #159 (August 1967, art by Jim Steranko) — the Nick Fury story originally titled 'Spy School.'
  • The Strange Tales #159 reprint within this issue brings S.H.I.E.L.D. characters Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones, Jasper Sitwell, Laura Brown, and Mamma Fury to a UK audience; the Marvel Fandom wiki credits this issue as the first Marvel UK appearance of Sydney 'Gaff' Levine, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and Clay Quartermain (all of whom originated in the original Strange Tales #159 printing in 1967).
  • The Fantastic Four #110 reprint brings Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm, Johnny Storm, Agatha Harkness, Franklin Richards, and Annihilus to UK readers in this anthology context.
  • Cover art is by Larry Lieber (also the editor); the issue included a free cut-out-and-wear cardboard Captain Britain mask as a launch gift — a tradition of British weekly comics — and also featured an editorial page written by Stan Lee introducing the new title.
  • The full run of the 1976 series (39 issues) has been collected multiple times, most completely in the Captain Britain Omnibus (Marvel, 2021), which also reproduced the original mask insert.
