When her father discovers the mix-up and learns the expensive skunk jacket will cost him $125, chaos ensues as Candy tries to manage the situation. The story also includes a subplot where Candy helps her friend Ted win a boat race by assisting with repairs and offering racing tips, while her friend Dawson attempts to use an excuse about the ice to spend time with Candy.
Candy O'Connor decides to enter the Winter Carnival contests at Hartwick High after learning that the charming ski instructor Dave Jones will be judging—though she insists it's just school spirit—while her rival Cornelia Clyde schemes to win the crown by any means necessary. Between Cornelia's sabotage attempts, jealous Ted Dawson's suspicions, and plenty of tumbles on the slopes, Candy must navigate the skating and skiing competitions to claim the carnival queen title.
