This issue contains two main stories: In the first, Candy ice-skates despite her friends' objections to the cold weather, and her parents worry about her venturing out in sub-zero temperatures with her red scarf. In "Rinks," a young man named Rims helps his mother at a laundromat and agrees to wash his father's shirt for a lodge meeting, ultimately earning money by helping with laundry. A third story features Ted attending a ballroom dancing lesson with professional dancer Paley Pales, where he struggles to learn the waltz and eventually dances with Candy in a contest.

Candy enters the Winter Carnival contests at her school after learning that Dave Jones, a charming twenty-five-year-old ski instructor, will be judging—though she insists it's just school spirit. Between skating and skiing competitions, Candy must contend with rival Cornelia's increasingly dirty tactics, while her friend Ted watches from the sidelines nursing his own suspicions about her sudden interest.
