History

The series was written by the British team of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning — already established Marvel collaborators — with interior pencils by Michael Lopez, inks by Scott Hanna, colors by Thomas S. Chu, letters by Jonathan Babcock, and editing by Mike Marts under Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. A notable behind-the-scenes wrinkle: painter Alex Ross contributed character design assistance for Elsa, and Gail Simone — uncredited at the time of publication — supplied dialogue for the series, a contribution that only became publicly known years later. The four-issue monthly miniseries carried a cover date of December 2001 through March 2002, with issue #1 released to shops in October 2001. Abnett and Lanning have stated they were actively steering away from any Buffy the Vampire Slayer influence despite the surface similarities, insisting they had not watched the show through while writing the series.

• Elsa Bloodstone's MCU debut came in the Disney+ Halloween special Werewolf by Night (October 7, 2022), directed by Michael Giacchino and starring Laura Donnelly; the director deliberately reimagined the character's visual presentation from the comics source material.
